Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 to Get Major Display Upgrade

The launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is anticipated for early July, and there’s already a lot of buzz about what Samsung has in store this year. Recently, more details have leaked, suggesting that the phone will feature a significant display upgrade.

According to The Elec, Samsung will use a thicker version of its ultra-thin display glass (UTG) for the Z Flip 6’s foldable screen. The thickness will increase from 30 microns to 50 microns, which is expected to provide a harder surface and reduce the display crease.

A smaller crease is definitely a welcome improvement. No one enjoys seeing a noticeable fold in the middle of their phone screen, even if it’s a foldable. With many other foldable phone makers making progress in minimizing the crease, it’s about time Samsung addressed the Galaxy Z Flip’s crease as well.

The enhanced surface strength should also make the Z Flip 6 more durable, although it might not match the durability of the Galaxy S24 Ultra with its Gorilla Glass Armor screen. Since UTG is not known for its strength, any improvement in durability is beneficial.

The Elec also reports that the Z Flip 6 might feature the same waterdrop hinge as the Z Flip 5. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 may introduce a new hinge design along with a new “UTG structure” to further reduce the display crease. The UTG might get even thicker next year, but this will depend on the new hinge design. Without a new hinge, the foldable glass will remain the same as this year’s model.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to be announced alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 sometime in early July—possibly July 10, according to rumors. The new flip phone is rumored to come with a larger cover display, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset in all regions, a 50MP main camera, and a full suite of Galaxy AI features.
