- Purchase a Backer Rod: Visit your local hardware store and buy a backer rod. A half-inch-wide rod is ideal for this repair. Backer rods are typically used to seal gaps, and they work perfectly for this issue.
- Measure and Cut: Measure the distance around the gasket and cut a piece of backer rod to fit. In my case, the rod needed to be 13.5 inches long.
- Install the Backer Rod: Insert the backer rod into the gasket lip. It should fit snugly and hold itself in place without any issues.
- Test the Seal: Close the fridge door and check the seal around the gasket. It should now be tight with no visible gaps.
Results After the Fix
After completing the fix, I cleaned the ice maker bin to remove any remaining water or ice. I gave the fridge about half a day to adjust before testing it.
When I checked the ice maker bin later, it made ice like normal, and the ice cubes weren’t melting. I waited three weeks before writing this to confirm the fix worked. So far, no sign of water leaks or melting ice has been shown.
Alternative Solutions
If you don’t have access to a backer rod, bubble wrap can be used as an alternative. However, I found the backer rod easier to work with and more durable.
