How to root and unroot Samsung Galaxy Y: tutorial

Check before you root your Galaxy Y

  1. Download the file Update.zip.
  2. Now copy Update.zip to the main directory of your SD card i.e. root.
  3. Turn your device off.
  4. Now to start the device in recovery mode by pressing Power, Volume Up and Home Button together.
  5. When you enter the recovery mode, select the option “Apply Update from SD Card” and select Update.zip which you copied to the root.
  6. After the process completes, restart your Samsung Galaxy Y.
  7. Download Busybox from here and install in on your device.
  8. That’s it, now your Samsung Galaxy Y is rooted.

    Hey i have used this method before but i installed the new update 2.3.6 with kernel 2.6.x due to which the unroot procedure is not working..please help

    Go to recovery Mode, and install this update. Once Done you will be rooted again on Android 2.3.6

  3. I followed the steps to root my Galaxy Y Pro 2.3.5 but after while installing busybox, it says that my phone is not rooted, seems that the Update.zip is not working on my phone. What can I do?

  4. Actually I just realized that during the installation of the update.zip file (in recovery mode) it says:

    .zip
    (Status 7)
    Installation aborted.

    Should I try another Upload.zip file, if yes where can I find it.

    BTW: My phone is a GT-B5510L Galaxy Y Pro

  5. is this for galaxy y or y pro! and what if something happens and the root process gets interrupted or phone gets bricked what do you do?

    • If the phone get bricked then you can fix the soft brick by installing the stock firmware using Odin.

  6. update_unroot.zip link is broken..
